Acne Laser Surgery

In the world today, moderate to severe acne affects children and adults alike.

There are many options for people who have uncontrollable acne, the most expensive being acne laser surgery. The cost of this treatment can be as much as two hundred dollars per session.

Acne laser surgery became popular when research indicated that lasers could treat the lesions and scars acne caused. Researchers concluded that laser could inhibit the growth of acne causing bacteria. It was proved that laser could diminish the sebaceous oil glands.

The word laser actually started out as L.A.S.E.R. the abbreviation stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. What this means is that acne laser surgery is administered by concentrating a single beam of light traveling on a single specific path. The laser is able to cut, seal and vaporize not only skin tissue, but also blood vessels.

Acne laser surgery is unique because of the intricate method by which it is administered. There are several levels of intensity and pulse duration that the laser can provide, each displaying it's own color according to the desired intensity level. While lasers can be used for many functions, when it is used for medical purposes, it has only one wavelength and power output.

Although acne laser surgery is an excellent form of treatment for severe acne, it is not a cure. Acne laser surgery can greatly reduce the signs of acne and give the appearance of healthy skin. It is important to remember that results are not instant, it can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to see significant results from acne laser surgery.

The most common use for acne laser surgery is to treat the scars caused by acne. The two lasers that are used for treatment are a resurfacing laser also called an ablative laser. These types of lasers work by heating up the scar tissue and eliminating it.

The second type of laser used in acne laser surgery is called a non-ablative laser. This type of laser performs the surgery without cutting the skin. This type of acne laser surgery is used most often because it is fast and non-invasive. The whole procedure can be completed within an hour and it not known to have side effects. It has the capabilities to make changes inside the dermis without having the weeks of recovery time that comes with acne laser surgery using the ablative laser.

Smoothbeam and Clearlight are the two forms of acne laser surgery that are available today. The FDA has approved both and both treat severe acne. For the people who suffer from moderate to severe acne, these forms of acne laser surgery are now being considered to bring relief.

That's one of the first questions most people ask about refractive surgery. What they really want to know is: Will I be happy with my eyesight after my operation? Unfortunately, there is no simple formula to determine answers to these questions. Although general guidelines help eye doctors decide who might benefit from refractive surgery, each candidate must be carefully reviewed on a case-by-case basis. That is why you go to your eye doctor for individualized care and advice. Every operation must be considered in terms of a benefit-to-risk ratio for that specific patient. With elective surgery, it always pays to be conservative.

  • How Amazing Technology Is Used To Literally Map Out Your Cornea

Scientists and doctors have made amazing advances in the past decade in treating common vision problems. A big part of their advances have been made through a procedure called "corneal topography." Corneal topography is a computer-generated printout that shows your eye doctor the curvature and "hills" and "valleys" of the cornea. When your eye doctor studies one of these brightly colored maps, he can diagnose corneal shape abnormalities and monitor changes on the surface of your eye. Once the doctor understands the various elevation changes on your eye's surface, he or she can determine whether or not you are a candidate for refractive surgery. If you decide to have LASIK surgery, the doctor can take before and after pictures to show changes in corneal topography as a result of the surgery. The maps will show how the surgery has effected the dioptric (refractive) power of the cornea. Corneal topography will spot any complications from the surgery. If LASIK surgery is intended to cure nearsightedness, the new corneal topography analysis should show a flattening of the cornea.
