Cold Remedies

No one enjoys a cold. In fact, most people are miserable with the symptoms of a cold! Considering that the average adult in the United States gets 2-3 colds per year, while children average 9 colds per year, it's good to know there are some natural cold remedies that will blow the socks off that nasty cold! Over the counter cold remedies tend to have side effects and they are expensive as well. Let's take a look at several natural cold remedies that are proven to alleviate symptoms, shorten the duration of the cold and can even, caught early, knock it out before it ever gets going.

There are three herbs you'll want on hand in your cupboard, ready at the first sign of a cold. These powerhouse herbs can prevent the cold from taking root, knocking it out within a couple of days, saving you most of the miseries of the common cold.

These herbs are echinacea, garlic and ginger.

Echinacea gives your immune system an immediate boost, allowing your body to fight off and sometimes even prevent the cold. Take three or four capsules three times a day.

Grab your garlic and ingest this in quantity. Raw is best, as cooking tends to dilute the effect. Garlic and parsley capsules, with parsley combating the garlic breath, will work. KyolicĂ,(R) is a patented cold pressed form of garlic which does not upset your stomach and which does not produce garlic breath. Garlic, in any of these forms, will reduce the life of your cold, making it one of the most effective cold remedies. Continue with your garlic until the cold is gone.

Now, it's time for some tasty ginger tea. With a baker's dozen of antiviral components, Traditional Chinese herbalists swear by ginger as the best of the natural cold remedies. It's important to use fresh ginger root for best effect. Grate a teaspoon of fresh ginger root into a cup and cover with boiling water. Steep for ten minutes and drink. Drink this tea throughout the day, as often as you like, but at least three cups in a day.

Another of the natural cold remedies which may be prepared as a tea and also tastes good, is mullein flower tea. Be sure you use the flowers, not the leaf. Mullein flower tea relieves coughing and soothes the mucous membranes, especially in the throat. Steep about 2 teaspoons of flowers in a cup of boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes and strain. Honey will sweeten the taste nicely, adding its own soothing property to this cold remedy.

Goldenseal root powder contains a natural antibiotic and clears excess mucus from throat and nasal passages, another common nasty feature of the cold. Take in capsules, as the taste is very bitter.

Next time a cold comes looking for you, try some of these natural cold remedies and see for yourself how quickly you'll be well again!
