How Much Sleep Do You Need?
Just how much sleep do you need every night? The answers varies depending, in a large part, on your age. Some people need nine hours a night. Others can do just fine with five hours of sleep. Depending on what age group you fall into, you can determine about how many hours of sleep you need each night.
Babies: Babies need the most sleep, up to 16 hours each day.
Infants: Infants require a lot of sleep, but not quite as much. An infant will do just fine with about 14 hours each day.
Children: As they get older, children require less sleep. A child needs between eight and nine hours of sleep each night.
Teenagers: Since this is when huge growth spurts occur, teenagers need more sleep than adults, around nine hours of sleep each night.
Adults: Adults needs vary. Adults require between seven to eight hours of sleep. There are further changes as we get much older. The adult sleep range can really vary from six hours to ten hours a night.
The adult sleep range between six and ten hours every night is quite wide. As an adult, how do you know if you are getting the right amount of sleep? You may be sleep deprived and not getting enough sleep at night if you can fall asleep easily during the day. If you are very tired and run down during the day, you might not be getting enough sleep at night. Losing concentration during the day is another indication that you might not be getting enough sleep.
Yet another clue that might tell you whether you get enough sleep each night is to think about how late you sleep on weekends. If your sleep pattern is correct, you should wake up at about the same time on the weekends as you do during the week. This, of course, assumes that you went to bed at your normal sleep time. If you sleep much later on the weekend, you are not sleeping enough during the week.
If your sleep patterns are off and you are not getting enough sleep, try going to bed earlier. Getting enough sleep is essential to living a healthy and productive life. Make sure you are getting enough.
