Aromatherapy - An Introduction

Aromatherapy massage is a form of massage which takes in the whole aspect of a person. Aromatherapy looks at the mind, body and spirit of a person, as well as their natural well-being how they live their day to day lives. It considers what kind of food they eat, and how much time they take to relax. Aromatherapy massage considers how much stress is in their lives due to work, children, social commitments, and financial burdens. It considers whether they have recently suffered a bereavement, enjoyed a birth or even just moved into a new house. Aromatherapy massage considers whether they have a disability, a disease, or are in general rundown conditions. Each of these factors is considered before treatment starts.

Aromatherapy massage combines the use of massage techniques with essential oils specifically chosen for the individual concerned. Aromatherapy is a unique treatment process because the combination of selected oils chosen is different for everyone. The essence of Aromatherapy is that it is tailor made to suit the individual seeking help, focusing on the individual and their individual needs.

Aromatherapy will try to get to the root of your problems. In this day and age, with the wide selection of oils to choose from, there is an inexhaustible supply available to treat a certain condition or ailment.

Aromatherapy extracts the natural aroma from different parts of a plant, flower, tree or even fruit. The oil extracted is then used for a specific ailment that can be physical, emotional or mental in nature. The oil is used to rebalance the person. Sometimes one particular plant will have different parts used for different ailments. For example, orange oil has many different uses: oil from the flower is called neroli, oil from the leaves is called petit grain-they each have different uses.

Aromatherapy has been practiced for hundreds of years, but it is fairly new in modern society. Because it is relatively new, it is sometimes regarded with suspicion and skepticism. In recent years, orthodox medicine is coming around to the idea that the use of essential oils are sometimes more beneficial to a person than the use of conventional medicinal aids. Aromatherapy is now becoming more mainstream. Essential oils do not have to be incorporated into a massage. They can be used at home in a bath, in a burner, as an air freshener, or mixed with a carrier oil, such as almond, to rub on the skin. Because of these uses, aromatherapy is becoming more widespread, and is continuing to grow into a widely accepted part of society. Today, people don't think twice about enjoying a stress relieving aromatherapy massage during their lunch break.

Modern aromatherapy in the West began almost by accident when a French chemist, Rene Gattefosse, burned his hand while working in a perfume laboratory. To relieve the pain, he immediately immersed his hand in some readily available lavender oil. The burn healed quickly and left no scar, perking his interest in the possible curative effects of plant oils.
